What volume of the US Auto insurance market is sold "direct"? e.g. internet, phone, mail(not via local agents)
Q. The Auto insurance market has historically sold policies via local agents: either "independent" agents (e.g. they sell several brands) or "captive" agents(e.g. the sell only one brand). There has been a great deal of media focus on growth in the volume of policies sold via the internet (with no agent involvement) or via the phone to a call center. Insurance providers GEICO and Progessive are leaders in this method. I am looking for actual data on what was sold in a recent year (2005, 2006, or 2007) using these direct methods, for the entire auto insurance industry. -$ volume of policies sold -volume of policies sold -% of policies sold

A. Someone in the world has the information your looking for, unfortunatly It's going to cost you some $$ to get it. Groups like PCI, NAIC & III have people who gather insurance filings from all fifty states and create reports. But unless you're a member of their organization or pay for the reports, you'll have to gather bits and pieces from various places like media reports: From raw data I've seen, direct writers account for around 20% of the personal auto insurance market. However a significant % of premium written by Progressive & GEICO (the #3 and #4 largest personal auto insurers) are written though their agency force. Good luck in your search.

Is it "OK" to have each of my 5 computers connect separately to the internet or should it only be one.
Q. I have 5 computers connected to the internet with separate firewalls. 3 notebook computers and 2 desktops. I could have ONE computer be connected to the internet, then connect each to the one (which I do not have now) or is it "OK" to have each one connect to the internet separately? I currently have the DSL modem hooked up to the router, then the other computers to the router to see the modem. I did it this way because I have 3 wireless connections to the wireless router ... I did it this way because this is the way I could figure out easily. I keep the firewalls and virus protection programs up to date. The reason for the question is I don't know if it is better to have each person "sign on" to the system instead of… [cont.]

A. How are your five computers currently connected to the internet? Are their ethernet cables all connected to a switch, and then the switch to a modem? Or is your switch actually a router/firewall? Or is your router/firewall actually a combination router/firewall + modem? Thank you for the additional details. Short answer: If your situation is what I think it is, then your router is already acting like the "ONE computer" situation you are suggesting. And if it is a newer model, then it most likely has a firewall built-in (which for the daring means you don't have to run firewall software on your computers, and for the paranoid means you have an extra layer of protection). 128 bit WEP is generally considered fine for keeping out… [cont.]

can i use internet connection sharing when the "base" computers internet source is wireless itself?
Q. as i have have stated i am trying to use my desktop as a "router" so that my laptop can connect through it using its internet connection. But the desktop does not get internet through a cable modem it gets it through a wireless connection is there any way i can have the desktop receiving internet while sharing its internet using a second wireless adapter?
Asked by Woody - Thu Apr 10 17:10:42 2008 - Computer Networking - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If you had a second wireless adapter you should be able to connect directly to the source and not have to share the internet. That is how I understand you to say you intend to connect them, through a second wireless connection. To literally share that connection I believe you would need to be physically networked to the other machine via Cat 5 or USB, something like that. If this isn't what you meant you might try looking at www.linksys.com for some ideas. Even if you don't have their products the site has some great networking advice and ideas. Good luck!

Can I use a splitter to "split" my ethernet internet connection, so two computers can use it at the same time?
Q. I have AT&T internet and it coming in via a ethernet cable, that I normally hook into my computer. I want to buy a splitter to place on that same ethernet cable, so that I can send the internet signal to another computer in my office. Is this possible? And if so, will it make the connection run slower than usual?

A. Get an Ethernet Switch = Linksys EZXS55W Ether Fast 5-Port Switch - - Most home equipment is not configured for splitters to work.

Mac OS X Lion Users: How do you get the "volume control button" to show at top when using an internet browser?
Q. I recently upgraded to OS X Lion. I love the new features in this operating system; However, the one down side is that I cannot access my volume control slider button at the top when I am using Safari or Firefox, though. In order for me to lower my volume, I have to switch to a Finder Window. This can frustrating when I run into a site that has annoying sound effects or when I want to lower the volume on a loud video quick without trying to search for the volume controls on the video player. Anyways, does anyone know of a way to make the volume control button appear at the top while using Safari or Firefox? Any or all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Sincerely, ~Jason. A. Little bumpy upgrade process, I suspect... The volume icon in the top menu bar should appear when you open System Preferences > Sound and then tick the option "Show volume in menu bar." The features of the function keys are supposed to be exactly as printed on the keys by default... Try if resetting the parameter RAM helps: Restart or start up the Mac and keep the keys Cmd-Option-P-R pressed until you hear the startup chime a second time. If this doesn't help, open System Preferences > Keyboard, then try if enabling and re-disabling the option "Use all F-keys... as standard function keys" helps.

If all computers were to be destroyed, will there still be "Internet"?
Q. I don't know. I was a little curious. If everything in the world that had access to the Internet were to be destroyed tomorrow, would the Internet still exist?
Asked by LittleDudeFromAcrossTheStreet - Sun Jan 17 22:15:05 2010 - Computer Networking - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Technically, yes. The Internet is just the method of connecting all the Internet-compatible devices in the world. Try to think of the Internet as a series of roads - every computer would be like a house, and to get from one house to another, you would use various roads to get there. If every house was destroyed, you would still have roadways. And even without computers, the Internet would still be useful - many services like telephones and television transmit data over the Internet, which will still allow communication. One thing you are doing is confusing the World Wide Web with the Internet. Servers (specialized computers) host webpages on the World Wide Web, so with no computers, the WWW would cease to exist. However, the WWW is not the… [cont.]

Can't find "Stereo Mix" in the Volume Mixer/Recording music off the internet?
Q. Audacity tutorials say that I need to select Stereo Mix, [video: Is there any way i can get it? It's actually important and kind of urgent. If I can't, then how else can I download/record songs off youtube? Please, help would be appreciated. That's horrible :/ but I guess I see their point... It's not worth all the cables, it's just a history project and I'm probably not going need this ever again. It is getting increasingly tricky to download now, though. A. I will tell you a secret. There is literally a conspiracy amongst many hardware vendors to take away your "Stereo Mix". This is because...well...people are using it to rip off audio from streaming services. Many PC manufacturers now break this functionality in their drivers, meaning you need to find OLDER drivers, or maybe OEM drivers that still have it allowed. This is tricky to tell you how to do without knowing what kind of computer you have...you need to know the Sound Card you have, then you need to google that device name and "Stereo Mix". Then you have to hunt around for somebody who found drivers that still have this. I used to have this functionality. Then I had to reinstall windows, and discovered that the new… [cont.]

A. You have a "hub" and not a router connected to your DSL modem? If that's the case, then I wonder how you set up your IP addressing scheme. Do the two computers that "work fine connected to the hub" actually have access to the internet? Here's the scoop: If you do not have a router, you are not doing any NAT (Network Address Translation) so whatever IP addresses you have on your computers are being exposed to the internet. Perhaps one of them is the IP you were given for your DSL connection - that will work just fine. Any other IP address may or may not work depending on what's being connected to, and what kind of intelligence is in the routers in between you and it. If your IP address is duplicated on the net, your… [cont.]

Is it possible to have two different internet connections" a Satelite and a DSL one" under one same Router?
Q. Note: Each connection has it's own modem, but it's under the same Linksys Router, which is used to share the internet signal. I am curious cuz our technician at our Internet Cafe has done so, but the ten computers on Ds L seem to not be working too well, it works but keeps saying sometimes" page cannot be displayed". While the ones on the satelite connection do work great. My question is: Is it possible that those 10 computers are giving problems cuz of the fact that the IP addresses get confused because it's only one Router being used? Please help me out with this one!

A. If you have a wireless router in your house, just click on the Airport icon in the menu bar (looks like a radar dish) and turn it on. It will connect, and ask you for your password if your network is protected. If your house is hard wired, you just plug your Mac Book into your router, it will connect automatically. If you use dial up, you need to buy a modem for the Mac Book, it doesn't come with one.

How would an internet "kill switch" work? Is it even possible?
Q. Is an internet "kill switch" even possible? Since the internet is essentially a network of computers that communicate with each other, it has no location. I don't see how you can just shut down the internet. Can someone explain this. Edit: what about the US which has 100's if not 1000's of ISP companies across their nation independent of the government. How exactly would that work?

A. The internet as you say is a link multiple computers in multiple countries. However links to the other countries are normally in one central location (Telecity in the UK for example) if you were to cut this link, you would not kill the internet but you would stop the UK from accessing the rest of the world wide web, and stop anyone outside connecting to the UK. Also shutting down the world's DNS servers, would effectively shut down the internet for everyone bar those who know the IP's of the sites they want to access. As for a kill switch, I dont think it is possible
